"It's so easy to become friends with people from all over the world"

Sam Rhodes, from the University of Minnesota Duluth, was an exchange student during autumn 2024. He appreciated the more self-paced approach to studying, which he found different from the structured style he was used to in the United States. Additionally, he gained deeper insights into Swedish culture through practical experiences, such as woodworking, which allowed him to engage with local traditions in a hands-on way.

Why did you choose Umeå University?

I chose Umeå University because of both its location and its connection to Swedish Culture. I wanted somewhere that was far enough north to see rural Sweden. In addition, Umeå is very close to the Arctic Circle, somewhere that is not easy to visit from most other places.

What do you like most about your studies in Umeå?

I am taking a Slöjd class which is essentially Swedish handicrafts and woodworking. It has been fascinating to learn more about Swedish culture through something as practical as woodworking. I am thrilled to be able to bring something back with me that I created with my own hands!

What is one difference between education in your home country and education in Sweden?

Sweden’s education system is much different than the system back in the United States. It is more self-paced than the one I am used to. Much of your studying and learning happens on your own outside of the classroom. Also, you generally take one class at a time so you can fully focus in on it.

What has been the most challenging aspect of your exchange experience?

The most challenging aspect of my experience will be leaving. The friends that I have made here will be lifelong and the memories will stay with me forever.

What has been the most memorable moment so far?

The most memorable moment for me was on a train ride back from Stockholm. My friends and I looked out the window and saw the Northern Lights all over the sky! It was the first time that I could see them moving with my own eyes.

What do you like do when you are not studying?

When I’m not studying, I love rock climbing, skiing, and making music. There are great opportunities to do all of these things right here in Umeå!

What are your favorite spots around Umeå and/or campus?

I have a few favorites. Downtown there is the Umeå Jazz Studio for weekly jazz concerts. On campus there is a coffee and food shop called Café Lindell that is a great place to study and hang out. Lake Nydala on the east side of town is amazing for having bonfires and swimming before it gets too cold outside!

What will you miss most about studying here at Umeå University?

I will miss the people the most. Through the Buddy Programme it is very easy to become friends with people from all over the world. Umeå is surrounded by beautiful nature and I will miss being able to hike in these forests.

What would you say or what advice would you give to another international student thinking of attending Umeå University?

My advice is to join the Buddy Programme! It is the best way to make friends and gives you fun activities to go to.
