Autumn Term 2024
About the course
Northern Scandinavia is a linguistically and culturally diverse region. In this introductory course, you will encounter literary works about and from the area and learn about the language situation both past and present. We will read and discuss a contemporary work of fiction and become acquainted with Icelandic sagas, Sami, and Tornedalian authorship. In addition to knowledge about Nordic languages, an overview of minority languages in the area is provided, both in terms of present-day circumstances and how they have evolved over time. We will also take a closer look at multilingual landscapes today and discuss them from a historical perspective.
