The course deals with the foundations of electromagnetism where electrostatics, with Coulomb's law, is a starting point. The electric field is defined and electrostatic field equations are derived. Electrical conductors are treated both statically and with a stationary current density. Insulators are treated macroscopically in terms of electrical dipole density. Electrical fields are determined mathematically by partial differential equations with boundary conditions. The magnetostatic theory is treated analogously with electrostatics, the starting point is the Lorentz force and law of Biot-Savart. The magnetic field is defined and the magnetostatic field equations are derived. Magnetic materials are given a macroscopic treatment in terms of magnetic dipole density. Finally, the theory is generalized and this leads to the Maxwell equations. Computer software is used to solve the electrostatic field equations.
