The student must deepen and broaden their knowledge in chemistry, develop their ability to apply the knowledge acquired during their studies, and train themselves to independently complete and report a major task. The project must be of a research-like nature. Students shall actively participate in the planning and independently carry out the project, and document and present results in a written report.
Expected learning outcomes
After the course the student should be able to:
demonstrate great independence to plan and carry out an advanced project in the field of chemistry in the area of specialization within given timeframes
demonstrate the ability to identify their need for additional knowledge and perform literature studies to obtain information about the state of knowledge regarding the project assignment
demonstrate great ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge and to analyze, assess and handle complex issues
demonstrate notable skills required to participate and contribute in research and development work
clearly describe, synthesize and discuss the results obtained in writing and place them in a larger context based on the state of knowledge and in a societal perspective.
Required Knowledge
At least 30 credits on advanced level for the course relevant chemistry courses, or the equivalent. And the course Advanced studies in chemistry 30 credits (5KE036). English 6/B.
Form of instruction
Teaching consists of supervision by the supervisor appointed by the university.
Examination modes
The course is examined through a written report in English. The following grades are used: Fail (U), Pass (G), and Pass with Distinction (VG). To pass the course it is required that all mandatory parts are approved. Those who pass the tests cannot have a re-exam for a higher grade. A student who has failed a course or part of a course twice is entitled to request appointment of another examiner, unless there are special reasons against it (HF Chap. 6 § 22). Requests for new examiner should be made to the Head of the Department of Chemistry.
Examiners may decide to deviate from the modes of assessment in the course syllabus. Individual adaption of modes of assessment must give due consideration to the student's needs. The adaption of modes of assessment must remain within the framework of the intended learning outcomes in the course syllabus. Students who require an adapted examination must submit a request to the department holding the course no later than 10 days before the examination. The examiner decides on the adaption of the examination, after which the student will be notified.
Students have the right to be assessed with respect to previous education or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired during professional activities. This assessment can result in credits reflecting the equivalent education at Umeå University. The application for this assessment has to be sent to the Student Center/Examina. More information about this assessment of credits can be found on the Umeå University Student Web, www.student.umu.se, and in the Higher Education regulations (chapter 6). Against rejection of the application for credit assessment, an appeal can be made (Higher Education regulations chapter 12) to the Appeal Board of the University. This applies to both, the entire or parts of the application for assessment of credits.
Other regulations
In the event that the course plan ceases to apply or undergoes major changes, students are guaranteed at least three exam opportunities (including the regular examination) according to the rules in the syllabus that the student was originally registered for; with a maximum of two years from the expiry date of the previous course plan or the course ended up to be chosen.
