The course is divided into two modules; Social policy in Focus 7.5 ECTS and Family in Focus 7.5 ECTS.
The module Social policy in Focus 7.5 ECTS provides an overview of the main theories and empirical developments in welfare state and social policy analysis. Major and updated topics are discussed such as aging societies, globalization and immigration. Special emphasis is put on the characteristics of welfare policies in Sweden. The development and distinctiveness of the Swedish Model is analyzed in a comparative and international perspective.
The module Family in Focus 7.5 ECTS is about family - what it is, what it looks like - a few decades into the 21st century. The course discusses the relationship between family an other parts of social life. Family from a Swedish perspective will be the starting point for a discussion of family from an international perspective, with a slight focus on North America and Europe. Some of the themes that will be discussed are: demographic trends, labour market, paid and unpaid work, "new" forms of family, the role of gender, the organization of families' everyday life.
Social Policy and Family in Focus 15 credits correspond to the courses Social Policy in Focus 7.5 credits and Family in Focus 7.5 credits together. The course may not be included in a degree together with Social Policy in Focus 7.5 credits and Family in Focus 7.5 credits.
