Product Analysis and Construction

About the course

This course introduces to the complexities of product development with a focus on construction, material selections and production techniques. The course also includes a course in parametric modelling and Rapid Prototyping. The course consists of the three following sections:

1. Parametric modelling (1.5 credits)
This section gives specialised knowledge in 3D modelling through a number of small exercises.

2. Design assignment (1.5 credits)
This section includes a design assignment where the student will be asked to create a new design for the existing product and develop this using 2D and 3D medias before the design is modelled digitally.

3. Product analysis (4.5 credits)
This section contains the analysis of the structure and construction of an existing product. The construction will then be redesigned with 3D modelling software with the purpose of creating files for prototype production with Rapid Prototyping (RPT) In order to create a full-functioning prototype, the students will assembly the RPT model parts with existing component.

Required Knowledge

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognized university. Specific entry requirements are: 60 ECTS credits in the field of Design. Student must also have passed all previous courses on the Master's Programme in Advanced Product Design at Umeå Institute of Design or the equivalent. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.
