Organic Pharmaceutical Chemistry

  • Number of credits 15 credits
  • Level Master’s level
  • Study form Web-based (online)
  • Starting Autumn Term 2024

About the course

The course is divided into two sections: a theoretical (11 ECTS) and a practical laboratory section (4 ECTS).
Relationships between molecular properties and three-dimensional structure of organic compounds are discussed. Methods for synthesis of, for example, biologically interesting substances such as pharmacologically active compounds are based on mechanisms of organic reactions. Reaction mechanisms also form the basis for explaining the formation of various products in organic reactions, and for creating strategies that maximize the yield of target compound and minimizes byproducts. The lab section provides training of practical skills in planning, performing and evaluation of experiments. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy are employed to resolve the structures of organic molecules.

The course is given in english if foreign students participate.
