Sport Education is a scientific discipline in which knowledge is created about the processes through which the human being is being formed and changed under social, cultural, and historical circumstances within the field of sports. The sport pedagogy field deals with, for example, various aspects of upbringing, socialisation, education, learning, teaching, governance, organisation and leadership or other processes. Questions can be raised, for example, about how and why certain values, knowledge, and skills are developed, how and why they are maintained, and how they vary within and between generations, groups and individuals.

The course applies cultural, historical, sociological, political and pedagogical perspectives on Nordic outdoor life. In focus is basic knowledge and understanding about trends and traditions in outdoor life in Scandinavia and particularly Sweden. The course also directly focuses on how to plan, organise and carry out safe outdoor recreation activities.

Expected learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

• understand trends and traditions in Swedish outdoor life from a cultural, historical, sociological, political, and educational perspective
• understand and discuss constraints and opportunities for outdoor life in relation to the landscape

Skills and ability

• plan, organise and execute traditional Swedish outdoor recreation activities
• demonstrate safe and effective outdoor techniques in various settings

Values and attitudes

• discuss and reflect on outdoor life from a sustainability perspective 

Required Knowledge

Form of instruction

The course is given in English. Teaching takes place in the form of lectures, seminars, and excursions. The course contains obligatory educational elements.The subject of the written assignment must be approved by the course teacher and be within the scope of the course.

Examination modes

The course is examined through the following examinations:

• Two individual oral seminars (Fail/Pass)
• Two obligatory excursions (Fail/Pass)
• One individual written assignment (Fail/Pass/Pass with distinction)

All compulsory assignments must have received the grade Pass in order to get the course grade Pass. In order to have the course grade Pass with distinction all assignments must have received the grade pass and the individual written assignment must have been graded with Pass with distinction.

For each examining part of the course is a regular examination given with a second re-examination within two months after the regular examination. For examinations performed in May and June is the first re-examination offered within three months of the regular examination. In addition to this is a third re-examination given within a year after the end of the course. Examination based on the same course plan as the regular examination is guaranteed within two years after the earlier syllabus has ceased to be valid or the course is no longer given (see rules for grades and examination on a basic and advanced level,Dnr: FS 1.1-574-22). A student who has failed two tests for a course or a part of a course is entitled to have another examiner appointed after a written request to the head of the department.

Examiners may decide to deviate from the modes of assessment in the course syllabus. Individual adaption of modes of assessment must give due consideration to the student's needs. The adaption of modes of assessment must remain within the framework of the intended learning outcomes in the course syllabus. Students who require an adapted examination must submit a request to the department holding the course no later than 10 days before the examination. The examiner decides on the adaption of the examination, after which the student will be notified. 

Transfer of credits

In order to transfer credits to a corresponding course at Umeå University, students have the right to submit previous education or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in the profession for evaluation. Application for transfer of credits is submitted to the Student Centre / Examinations. More information on transfer of credits is available on Umeå University's student website, www.umu.se/student, and the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 6). A refusal for transfer of credits may be appealed against (Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 12) to the University Appeals Board. This applies whether the entire application or part of the application for transfer of credits is refused.

Other regulations

Participating in the course may require costs for the participants as the course will be held at places outside the university area that will require overnight stay. The participants are expected to have appropriate equipment for outdoor activities.
