How to start

  • 2. Activate your user account and MFA

    As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your Umu-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

    With your user account you can:

    • register for courses
    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

    If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

    Install MFA for a more secure login
    To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

  • 3. Course registration

    You need to be registered for the course in the study documentation system LADOK to be able to follow the course and to get your results recorded during the course.
    Online registration is open between Tuesday 22th August 2023 and Tuesday 5th September 2023.
    To be able to sign in at the student website and register online, you need to have activated your Umu-id account.

  • Programme/course information

    The roll call at the first lecture is mandatory and it is important to notify the course coordinator if you can’t participate.

    Course content, parts and examination
    The course starts with nuclear magnetic resonance physics, including how to manipulate and detect signal from the nuclear spins and how that can be utilized to create an imaging system – magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
    After that we continue by studying the technical aspects of an MRI scanner and its main components such as the main magnet, the gradients and the RF-system. Deviations from the ideal functionality of the scanner components and consequences of these are studied to give an understanding of common artifacts and to give tools to reduce these.
    The course also include image reconstruction and how the design of pulse sequences affect the image contrast. The most important types of MRI sequences such as gradient echo and spin echo are studied in detail, while more specialized sequences such as those used for diffusion weighted imaging, spectroscopy and flow measurements are treated more superficially. Techniques used for speeding up MRI are also studied. An introduction to ultrasound imaging is included in the course. Here we study ultrasound physics and how the imaging system is constructed. Generation of ultrasound, pulse-echo methods and Doppler techniques are also included.

    The course contains two parts where the theory (6hp) is examined at a written exam and a laboratory part (1.5hp) that is examined via written laboratory reports.

    After the course, the students are expected to:

    • In detail explain the physics on which MRI is based.
    • In detail describe the key components of an MRI scanner, their function
    • limitations and impact on image quality.
    • In detail explain the structure of MR raw data and how images are created from these data.
    • Describe different types of MRI sequences, how they are designed, their application areas, strengths and weaknesses, as well as importance for image contrast and signal-to-noise ratio.
    • Know the most common artifacts and underlying causes of these.
    • Know different techniques to speed up MR imaging, the principles for these, and critically examine the advantages and disadvantages of different technologies.
    • Explain the physics underlying ultrasound imaging and how it is used to create images.
    • Know the most common artifacts in ultrasound diagnostics, their underlying causes and how they can be minimized
    • Independently use the Bloch equations to quantitatively describe how spin magnetization behaves in an MRI scanner.
    • Identify and reduce artifacts.
    • Independently calculate how a MRI sequence should be designed for a desired contrast, resolution, image size and signal-to-noise ratio.
    • Show basic skills to use a clinical MRI scanner.
    • Assess and evaluate risks with MRI.
    • Evaluate the appropriate MR sequence selection based on requirements on for instance contrast.
    • Make relevant assessments in the choice of ultrasound probes and settings for a specified penetration depth, resolution and contrast.

  • Recommended arrival times

    International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular semester, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but no later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme or course.

    If you will have student housing through the Housing Office at Umeå University you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.

    Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

  • Orientation

    Moving to a new country with an unfamiliar language, culture and customs can be a challenge. We would like to help you and ease that challenge so that you can focus on your studies. Therefore, we would like to offer you the possibility to take part in our Orientation, which begins a few days before the start of the semester (Autumn) or the same day as the semester starts (Spring).

  • Get your UmU card

    When you are on Campus Umeå, Umeå Arts Campus or Campus Örnsköldsvik, you will need a UmU card. The card has the following functions:

    • borrowing card for the University Library system
    • copying and printing card.

  • Access to Microsoft Office 365

    Students at Umeå University have free access to the programmes of Microsoft Office 365. This means that you have access to Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Whiteboard Forms, your student email and other services which can facilitate your studies and your collaboration with other students. To access Office 365 you need to activate your UmU-id.
