Leadership in the Outdoors 7.5 credits

Friluftsliv med tältning och kanoting

About the course

The course aims to develop the student's skills in leadership in different situations in the outdoors. The course integrates theories of leadership and group processes where reflection is a tool for developing leadership in the outdoors.

Sport Education

Sport Education is a scientific discipline in which knowledge is created about the processes through which the human being is being formed and changed under social, cultural, and historical circumstances within the field of sports. The sport pedagogy field deals with, for example, various aspects of upbringing, socialisation, education, learning, teaching, governance, organisation and leadership or other processes. Questions can be raised, for example, about how and why certain values, knowledge, and skills are developed, how and why they are maintained, and how they vary within and between generations, groups and individuals.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring anything to participate in the course?

Since the course includes outdoor activities such as tenting and canoeing, you will receive a packing list with your acceptance notification and Welcome Letter. Some items can be borrowed on site.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes, you should feel comfortable around water and be able to swim outdoors, as canoeing will take place on a lake or river. While a swimming certificate isn't required, it's important to know your own swimming ability and be able to swim with a life jacket, which is mandatory during canoeing.

I am an exchange student. Will you be able to fill in documents (i.e. percentage) from my home university to translate the Swedish grade to percentage so that I can credit my course?

No, we do not sign these documents. Your home university is responsible for translating Swedish grades into your country's grading system. It may help to present your course work and exams from Umeå University to your home university when you return.
