WELCOME TO THE COURSE

Informatics Internship

Welcome to the course Informatics Internship, autumn term 2022! On this page you will find important information about how to register for the course, links to the learning platform and course schedule, as well as contact information to the main teacher and our Student Support. You can also read more about the course, the university and student life. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact us by using the form below.

How to start

  • 2. Activate your user account and MFA

As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your Umu-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

With your user account you can:

    • register for courses
    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

Install MFA for a more secure login
To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

I want to activate my user account and install MFA

Exchange student or tuition fee paying student

If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

    Help! It´s not working

If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

  • 3. Course registration

When you have replied to your offer, you must register for the course you have been admitted to.

For this course, you can only be registered after your internship plan is approved. Therefore, it is important that you contact the course teacher as soon as possible after August 10 to discuss the internship, even though the course starts in November. The reason for this is that it can take time to find an intership. In the learning platform Canvas (available from August 10) there is more detailed information about what you need to do before the course begins.

    Learning platform
The communication between students and teachers will mainly take place via Canvas, one of Umeå University's learning and collaboration platforms. Therefore, it is essential that you have access to a computer and internet connection with good transfer speed. In the learning platform, you will have access to the course's activities such as information about course literature, assignments, submissions, lectures and discussion forums.

To be able to login to Canvas you need to have activated your Umu-id account and registered for the course. You can find more information about Canvas and Umu-id on the Student website. Once you have registered for the course and logged in to Canvas with your Umu-id, you will see the course as an optional tab in your work environment. The learning platform in Canvas opens at the start of the course.

About the course

  • Course information

This is a course that consists of two modules:

Module 1: To establishing an internship (1.5 credits)

This module contains the preparatory work you need to do to be able to take the course. You yourself must make the contact and acquire your internship where you will be during the course. The internship must be linked to the bachelor's program you have taken in Informatics or to the master program in Informatics that you are attending. You must establish an internship plan that both the internship site and the course coordinator must approve. Documentation regarding the content of the internship plan can be found on the learning platform Canvas. At Canvas you will also find a document aimed for yor internship site, that describes what is expected of them and what they can expecting from receiving an intern.

Module 2: Practice and reflection in work-based work (13.5 credits)

When the internship plan has been approved, you are authorized to take the course. In this module, you carry out the work-based internship yourself. The idea is that you will become an active part of the workplace where you do your internship. The purpose of the course module is for you to have the opportunity to use previously acquired knowledge and experience in informatics into applied work. With the help of the course literature and seminars, you will, together with your classmates, also develop the ability to look at the internship work from a theoretical perspective. You will also actively investigate terms, conditions, prerequisites and working methods that affect the organization where you are doing your internship. We will have the introduction and the final presentation on campus. Our seminar meetings during the course will take place via Zoom.
