Contents

In the course, students will plan a cognitive science project implemented with a supervisor at a company, organization or within a research project. Students will apply knowledge and skills acquired in previous courses on issues related to cognitive science.

The project should have a specific contact person and should be done in collaboration with the employees of the company / organization / research project. Students shall during the time of the project maintain individual documentation which is then used as a basis for their final presentation. The individual documentation shall be submitted to the course leader.

Expected learning outcomes

With a high degree of independence the student should after the course be able to:

  • plan and carry out a project in cognitive science
  • apply their cognitive skills and experiences in a project
  • seek out and acquire knowledge relevant to the project
  • actively participate in a project group
  • administer and document project work
  • present results in both oral and written form
  • critically examine cognitive science project

Required Knowledge

Admission to the course requires at least 15 credits cognitive science at advanced level including the course Scientific perspectives and research design, 7.5 credits, or equivalent. There may be additional requirements depending on the nature of the project.

Form of instruction

At the start of the course the student and research leader formulate a project plan. A project, which will include nine weeks of full time work, is then performed with a supervisor and contact person at a company, organization or project

The course concludes with an oral presentation of the project. In addition, a written record of the project work is submitted with a written self-reflection over the student's own performance and learned lessons from the project work.

The project plan, concluding project presentation and self-reflection and documentation are required and hence graded elements.

Examination modes

Examination takes place continuously via the approval of the advancement through the different stages of the course. The graded elements are the project plan, project work, presentation at the conclusion of the project, the critical review of another student’s project and written self-reflection. In the project plan and the project work can get the grades Pass (G) or Fail (U). The three other graded elements, Presentation, Critiquing and Self-reflection, can get the grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG). The grade for the course as a whole is based on a composite assessment of all graded elements so that for a Pass with Distinction (VG) for the entire course a Pass with Distinction (VG) on two of the graded elements and Pass (G) on the other is required. To pass (G), the course requires that all graded elements have been approved.
Students who did not receive approval of mandatory graded elements are entitled to additional examination as dictated by the University’s rules. The student has the right to be examined according to the course plan in force at the time of registration for a maximum of two years. Students are entitled to five attempts at an exam within that two year period. A student who twice failed an examination is entitled to request that the department’s Head of Undergraduate Studies appoint another examiner to determine the grade.

Transfer of Credits:
Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University.  Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english)  and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance.  Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected
