Contents

The course consists of two modules:

Module 1. Theory part, 5.5 ECTS: The course deals with genetic theory, methodology and analysis. The overall contant of the course is genetic principles and the underlying mechanisms at the molecular level as well as at the cell, organism, and population level. In the theory part, the structure, organization and evolution of the genetic material, genetic methodology, gene regulation, epigenetics and population genetics are presented. After the theory sessions (in the form of lectures), teacher-led discussions are conducted with questions aimed at tying these parts together into a context. The theory part also includes calculation exercises where genetic analysis is practiced. The course aims to give students an overall understanding of the organization of the genetic material and how genetic changes at the molecular level can affect biological processes and how these changes affect the organism, the population and, by extension, evolution. The course also includes problem solving in the form of genetic analysis as well as training in reading, understanding, and presenting original articles in the field.

Module 2. Laboratory part, 2.0 ECTS: The laboratory course provides training in genetic experiment planning and data analysis.
