About the course

The course provides an understanding of feminist perspectives on Artificial Intelligence (AI) as well as frameworks for critically analyzing and reshaping digital technology. Throughout the course, the intersections between feminist theory and AI are explored, with a particular focus on how gender, power, ethnicity, and ethics are embedded in AI systems and algorithms. Additionally, the dilemmas faced by marginalized groups in digital spaces are examined, as well as how these challenges can create opportunities for a more inclusive and just development of AI.

Outline for distance course

Teaching is conducted online via a digital learning environment which is provided by the Department of Informatics. The course structure presumes that students have access to a computer and Internet connection. 
Some course activities may be held in hybrid form with the option of participating remotely or on site at the university campus in Umeå. 

Required Knowledge

Admission to the course requires 90 credits in one of the following subjects: Informatics, Computer Science, Business Administration, Pedagogy, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, or equivalent studies. Also required is English 6/B.
