The course covers selected, sophisticated methods for GIS analysis, but also advanced editing, geoprocessing and thematic mapping techniques. Automation of ArcGIS workflows, using the application ModelBuilder and scripting in the Python programming language, constitute central course elements.
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to: Knowledge and understanding (1) Describe the supply of central GIS tools for editing, geoprocessing and analysis, Competence and skills (2) apply specific GIS tools for generalisation, overlay analysis and space-time cluster analysis, (3) automate workflows using the application ModelBuilder and the Python programming language, (4) conduct troubleshooting and identify and correct errors in data sources and workflows, and Judgement and approach (5) independently identify an appropriate GIS-based workflow for analysis based on the problem and task at hand.
Required Knowledge
Univ: 120 ECTS, 60 ECTS of which in a major field of subject, including 15 ECTS in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6
Form of instruction
The course consists of lectures and exercises. The exercises - partly carried out under teacher supervision - constitutes an essential part of the course.
The software used in the course are the GIS programs ArcGIS Desktop and its extension Spatial Analyst and ArcGIS Pro.
The course is taught in English.
Examination modes
Examination is based on individual written/graphical accounts of exercises and a take-home examination.
Grades cannot be appealed, i.e., re-evaluated by a higher authority, but the student may make comments on the grading or request that the examiner reconsider the decision. A student who has taken two examinations in a course or a part of a course without obtaining a passing grade is entitled to have another examiner appointed, unless there are special reasons to the contrary (6 Chap. 22 § Higher Education Ordinance). The student may submit a request for a different examiner to the Director of Studies.
Decisions about academic credit transfer are made on an individual basis.
