Microbial ecology from land to sea

A mini-symposium with prominent speakers invited to Umeå University by the strategic research programme EcoChange.

When?

7 December 2023 at 13-15.35.

Where?

Room KBG501, Department of Ecology and Environmental Science (EMG), Umeå University.

Speakers:

Klaus Jürgens is Professor and Deputy Head Department of Biological Oceanography, Leibniz Institute of Baltic Sea Research, Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany. His research concerns marine microbial ecology of the Baltic Sea and other oxygen-deficient marine systems with pelagic redoxclines, prokaryotic diversity and biogeochemical transformations, protist diversity and trophic interactions etc. He also studies microbial diversity and functions in salinity gradients, sediment microbial communities, and other topics.

Peter Lind is an Associate professor at the Department of Molecular Biology and Umeå Centre for Microbial Research, Umeå University. He works with experimental evolution and modelling to study the predictability of evolution on different biological levels. He uses bacterial model systems to study the evolution of biofilm mutants, multi-drug resistance and the evolution of multicellularity to test our ability to predict evolutionary outcomes and to better understand the underlying causes determining predictability.

Stefan Bertilsson is Professor in functional ecology of limnic systems at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, Microbial Ecology Division, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. In his research, he uses a combination of molecular methods, experiments and field observations to study microbial diversity and the role of microorganisms and their interactions in key biogeochemical processes such as organic matter degradation, methane cycling, mercury methylation and nitrogen fixation.
