Blended learning - some parts are performed on campus for practical sessions. Otherwise, students are taught online with live and/or recorded lectures and workshops. We had to be creative when it came to practical elements of the course. With greater restrictions in place, the online sessions provide an outlet for our students to deliver exercise classes in a safe way and for individuals to participate in the safety of their own home. This is important both for mental and physical health.
How will the students be examined?
They have to demonstrate certain leadership behaviors as an exercise leader, with an outcome to enhance participants enjoyment, motivation and physical and psychological well-being. For this they are required to develop two online 30-minute total training workouts (one with use of equipment and one without). The students will also present the theoretical and behavioral underpinnings to their session during a 20-minute online presentation.
Usually you have a collaboration with IKSU, where they deliver the classes for IKSU and get feedback from the participants. How do the students get feedback now?
The aim is to make the sessions available for IKSU members. Additionally, we have created a YouTube channel that is hosting the students training sessions. The students have also met with our sport psychology staff and received feedback on their training sessions. They will receive further feedback after their presentation. The idea during their presentation is that they will embed clips from their videos and discuss the theoretical and behavioral underpinnings in relation to specific leadership behaviors that promote, motivation, satisfaction, feelings of self-efficacy, and competence among the participants. We will provide our psychology staff who take part in the training classes with an evaluation form, so students can reach additional feedback.
Do you think that teachers will retain this form of teaching and graduation even if we go back to normal and we do not have to think about keeping a social distance?
This current situation has provided both teachers and students opportunities to review various ways to engage the population in physical activity. We also wanted to promote our student’s readiness to adapt to a changing world in which greater use of technologies become a part of their professional practice. We attempted to turn around what may have initially been a “threat” to their learning experience to an opportunity to gain wider professional skills.
