Christian Ewald, Professor in Financial Mathematics

Christian Ewald, professor, stående framför fontänen utanför MIT-huset på Umeå universitet.

Research fields: Mathematical Economics and Finance as well as Risk Management, I work in between the disciplines Mathematics, Economics, and Finance. However, up to my PhD in Heidelberg in 2002, I was a pure Mathematician and my PhD thesis was in the area of Algebraic Topology.

Teaching in the Master's program: The Financial Mathematics course, since 2022.

What do you enjoy most about teaching in these programmes?

- I enjoy the communication with the students. The students at Umeå University are very clever and motivated. They ask a lot of questions and there is a two-way dialogue in the courses, not just a monologue. As a teacher one feels that students at Umeå University want to learn something and that there is a good culture of working together.

What do you believe distinguishes Umeå University's master's programme in mathematics/mathematical statistics from others?

- The course sizes are reasonable and course convenors are approachable. There is an excellent student community and beyond that, Master’s student are well integrated within the department.

Could you provide examples of recent student research projects or collaborations you've been involved in?

- Projects that I supervise or assess are mostly in the area of Mathematical Finance and Investment, and very often in collaboration with financial institutions like Nasdaq, pension and insurance companies, investment institutes and companies.

How do you think the programmes prepare students for careers in mathematics or mathematical statistics?

- I think Umeå provides a very solid and broad based masters program in mathematics or mathematical statistics which offers a lot of opportunities for graduates to work for example in the financial sector, insurance or pensions, engineering, consulting etc. A key feature perhaps is that companies in the Umeå region really engage with the university and that this collaboration benefits all, the students, the lecturers and the companies.
