The Department of Language Studies is the largest department in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities with over 100 employees: researchers, teachers, doctoral students and administrative staff. We offer education in English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Language Teaching and Learning, Linguistics, Meänkieli, Russian, Sami, Spanish, and Swedish/Nordic languages.
The researchers at the department work on projects in linguistics, literary studies, language didactics, reading and writing research, cultural studies and cognitive science. More than thirty PhD students are linked to one of our five postgraduate subjects: the literature of modern languages, pedagogical work, Sami studies, language teaching and learning, and linguistics.
