Doctoral studies involve four years of full-time study, which include a number of courses and a doctoral thesis. Besides acquiring in-depth knowledge of a field of study, you will also cultivate your critical and analytical thinking. During your studies, you get to solve problems independently as you prepare for a professional career within academia, or the business or public sector. To be admitted to doctoral studies you are also required to have guaranteed financing for the entire study period trough a doctoral student position.
Study plans, guidelines and regulations
Each of our research subjects have general study plans for doctoral studies. Our doctoral students also follow a set of regulations for doctoral studies at Umeå University. You may also find more information at the Faculty of arts webpages for doctoral students.
Doctoral students at our department belong to different doctoral colleges dependant on the orientation of their research project. Many doctoral students at the Faculty of Arts belong to Umeå Faculty of Art´s Doctoral College, the others belong to The Postgraduate School in the Educational Sciences or to The Graduate School of Gender studies.
