Urology and andrology

Urology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the male urogenital system, including the kidneys, bladder and prostate. Andrology is a branch of medicine that specifically addresses male reproductive and sexual health, such as erectile dysfunction and male infertility. Both specialities combine medical and surgical expertise to improve men's urinary and reproductive health, thereby increasing the quality of life of patients.

We conduct both research and training in the fields of urology and andrology. Urology is the study of diseases of the urinary tract, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Andrology is a branch of urology and is described as the study of diseases of the male sexual system. The male sexual system includes the prostate, testicles, epididymis, vas deferens and seminal vesicles.

The speciality includes knowledge and skills in traditional surgical treatment of urological diseases. Examples of common urological diseases are

  • bladder dysfunction
  • cancer of the prostate, kidneys, bladder, testicles and penis
  • prostate diseases such as benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • infections of the urinary tract (urinary tract infection, inflammation of the renal pelvis, etc.)
  • kidney stones
  • incontinence

Urology is one of the 14 independent specialities represented in all EU countries. Technological developments in the field have been rapid and, in addition to surgery, urology deals with a number of high-tech treatments, such as shock wave therapy for kidney stones and various types of heat and cold treatment for prostate enlargement and tumours. Basic urological care is provided at most levels of care in the country, while specialised urological care is referred to urology specialists for additional investigations and treatments.
