Hand and plastic surgery are medical specialities that focus on restoring function and form to the extremities of the body, as well as correcting cosmetic and reconstructive needs. Hand surgeons treat complex hand injuries and nerve and vascular reconstruction. Plastic surgeons perform procedures to improve appearance and correct defects. Hand and plastic surgery has a major impact on patients' quality of life and self-image through personalised and advanced surgical techniques.

We provide training at undergraduate and postgraduate level: at undergraduate level, we teach hand surgery to students on the Medical Degree Programme, and at postgraduate level, we provide training for those wishing to do a PhD in hand surgery.
Plastic surgery
Plastic surgery is a technical speciality in which we work to surgically solve problems in many different diagnoses and conditions. We operate on patients of all ages with the aim of normalising the appearance and/or function of the body. We only perform reconstructive surgery, which means that we restore and repair function and appearance after accidents, cancers or congenital malformations. We do not perform cosmetic plastic surgery.
We are not responsible for any undergraduate courses, but we do offer postgraduate training for those wishing to pursue a doctorate.
Our research
Our research is mainly translational, which means that it has an experimental character where we start from clinical research, but work on the issues in the laboratory.
