Anaesthesiology and intensive care

Anaesthesiology, or 'perioperative medicine', is the care of patients before, during and after their operations or treatments. Intensive care is the same speciality and the care of critically ill patients with advanced vital signs support. The speciality is also involved in the treatment of patients with acute or chronic pain problems. Further, anaesthesiologists are involved in emergency critical medicine even outside the hospital, for example with advanced ambulance care.

We conduct both research and education in anaesthesiology and intensive care. Anaesthesiology is the study of states without sensation. Anaesthesia is another word for narcosis and means controlled sedation. Intensive care involves advanced diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of critically ill patients.

We conduct research and training at the hospitals in Umeå, Sundsvall, Sunderbyn and Östersund. There is close co-operation between the hospitals in the northern healthcare region.

We conduct research and training in these fields:

  • pre-hospital care (care before the hospital, for example at an accident site)
  • perioperative care (care before, during and after surgery)
  • intensive care for critically ill patients
  • pain management for both acute and chronic pain
  • transport medicine (care during transport of critically ill patients)
