Understanding (and explaining) AI

What is AI and how should it be developed, controlled and implemented?

About Understanding (and explaining) AI

In science and everyday life, understanding and explaining are some of the central activities that allow us to control, direct, and predict the behavior of natural phenomena as well as of our own creations.

Current Artificial Intelligence applications are powerful, but also somewhat mysterious and opaque, both to AI researchers themselves and to society at large. This poses pressing challenges to how we design, regulate, and use AI systems, as well as to how we engage with the potentialities and limitations of AI technology.

In TAIGAs focus area Understanding (and explaining) AI we take our cue from research in philosophy of science and social epistemology to pursue an interdisciplinary investigation of understanding and explaining AI, looking at how insights about understanding in science and understanding of science by non-scientists can be relevant to understanding AI applications and the consequences they produce.
