Are you a master's student, doctoral student, or early career researcher looking to expand your knowledge of the Arctic? Then the Canada-Sweden Arctic Ocean Expedition 2025 is for you!
Arctic Centre is a connectivity hub for arctic transdisciplinary research and education.
As a participant, you will join an international expedition aboard the Swedish icebreaker Oden and the Canadian icebreaker CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent from August 9 to September 19, 2025. This journey is organized by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat.
The program includes the course The Arctic Ocean Climate System (10 ECTS), which combines lectures, practical work, and research projects. The course covers the coupled Arctic climate system and offers opportunities to utilize collected data in your own research projects.
Course Content
Lectures and guidance from senior researchers across seven different research areas:
Geological oceanography: Studies of sediments and core sampling
Geophysical mapping: Seafloor and water column mapping with sonar
Meteorology: Energy exchange and atmospheric processes
Oceanography and marine chemistry: Water masses and substance flows in the Arctic
Primary productivity and biogeochemical cycles: Phytoplankton and carbon cycles
Water isotopes: Arctic water cycles and moisture transport
Sea ice properties: Dynamics, thickness, and snow on the ice
Additionally, there will be practical work onboard, including data collection and analysis, with opportunities to collaborate with researchers from both Sweden and Canada.
Application
Master's students, doctoral students, or researchers who have completed their doctoral degree within the last seven years are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to participants affiliated with a Swedish or Canadian university.
