The Annual Celebration - times and information

 

Friday 4 February

Inauguration of the exhibition
At 11:00–11:30, University Library, study hall
No dress code applies

An exhibition of the honorary doctors, new professors and award recipients is presented in the study hall of the University Library in the Social Sciences Building. 

  • It would be nice if you can attend, but it is optional.

Faculty lunch
At 12:00, Hjorton, the Universum Restaurant
No dress code applies

Each faculty will host a lunch for their honorary doctors, new professors and award recipients. 

  • An invitation will be sent from your faculty.

Rehearsal
At 13:30 until aprox. 15:00, Aula Nordica
No dress code applies

At the rehearsal, the details of the ceremony will be described and somewhat rehearsed. 

  • Attending the rehearsal is mandatory and very important.

Vice-Chancellor's reception
At 18:00–20:00, P5, Väven
Dress code: Dark suit and evening dress

Vice-Chancellor Hans Adolfsson will host a reception where you can enjoy some canapés, wine/ soft drinks and mingle with the other new professors, award recipients, honorary and jubilee doctors. You may bring one accompanying guest.

This event aplies only for registered guests.

Dress code at the reception

A dark suit (dark blue, black or dark grey) with a white shirt and a tie or a fly in any colour or pattern, but not black or white.

A dress or skirt and a top, in any colour and pattern, of a finer fabric, for instance silk, velvet or crepe. The length of the dress or skirt should be below the knee, however, it should not be a long dress or skirt. It can be combined with a little jacket or a short cardigan.

Saturday 5 February

Lectures
At 9:00–12:00, Humanities Building and Social Sciences Building

It is a tradition at Umeå University that honorary doctors, new professors and award
recipients deliver a 15-minute popular lecture each on their field of research. The general
public is welcome to attend.

The lecture programme will soon be presented here.

 Information about the lectures

New professors, award recipients and honorary doctors deliver popular lecture each to the general public. The lecture should be about 15 minutes long about your research, your work or a similar topic.

In each lecture hall there is a lecture host, who before the lecture introduces himself/herself and greets the audience. The lecture hosts then hand over directly to new professors and award recipients, while the honorary doctors are first briefly presented by their own host.

  • Remember to arrive in good time to the lecture hall before your lecture.

For new professors or award recipients who are employed at Umeå University

If you will use a Powerpoint presentation, use the university's Powerpoint presentation template.

Gathering before the ceremony
At 16:00, Rotundan.
Dress code: Formal.

There will be a gathering for those who will walk in the procession. You must be there by 16:30 at the latest. Before the ceremony, you will line up outside the auditorium under the instructions of the faculty marshalls.

  • All new professors, award recipients, honorary and jubilee doctors must participte in the gathering.

Ceremony
At 17:00, Aula Nordica.
Dress code: Formal.

At the start of the ceremony, the honorary and jublee doctors, new professors and award recipients will enter the auditorium in procession and take their seats on stage.

The opening addresses will be followed by the conferment of honorary and jublee doctorates, the installation of new professors, and finally by the presentation of awards for scientific achievement. You make no speeches, but each presentation is followed by applause.

Watch the 2018 ceremony

A group photo will be taken and the ceremony will be filmed. The audience are allowed to film and take photos.

Banquet and dance
At 19:00, Universum Restaurant.
Dress code: Formal.

The Universum Restaurant is in the same building as Aula Nordica, so the banquet begins immediately after the ceremony. Dinner will be preceded by a gathering and a welcome toast for the guests. At the dinner, a three-course meal will be served with wine or non-alcoholic refreshments. After coffee has been served, the orchestra Renhornen will play and those who want are welcome to dance.

After the dinner, a photographer will take individual photos or group photos.

Speeches during dinner

A number of brief speeches will be made during dinner. The speakers concerned has been asked in advance.

 Formal attire at the gathering, the ceremony and the banquet

You must wear formal dress, i.e.

  • white tie and tails (in Swedish: svart frack med vit väst och vit fluga)
  • long evening gown/skirt with separate top in the colour of your choice
  • academic gown
  • national costume.

Any headgear that comes with your outfit should not be worn in the procession or at the ceremony. If you have questions about your outfit please contact arshogtid@umu.se.

Ribbons and doctoral hats
The ribbon of an order may be worn. Only the dean and the honorary doctors and jubilee doctors of the Faculty of medicine participating in the ceremony will wear doctoral hats.

 

Information for you who have invited guests

Banuqet

Cost for guests attending the banquet
You and one accompanying person are guests of the University at the banquet. You can invite four other guests at your own expense, the fee is SEK 900 for adults and SEK 600 for persons under the age of 18. The invoice will be sent to you in March.

Children
Usually children under the age of 10 do not attend the banquet. Please note that children receive the same menu as the adults, but with no alcohol.

Seating plan for the banquet
You and you guests will sit together at the banquet. No tickets are needed.

Cancellation to the banquet

Please send cancellations to arshogtid@umu.se. You do not have to pay for cancellations made up to Thursday 27 Januari.

Ceremony

Your guests attending the banquet will be appointed reserved seats at the ceremony.

You may also reserve seats for guests just attending the ceremony.

We do not recommend bringing small children to the ceremony.

Information for your guests

You invite your guests yourself and give them the information they need for now, for example information about dress code, time and date.

Information about the reserved seats for your guests at the ceremonywill be sent to you by e-mail a few days prior to the ceremony.

Dress code for your guests

Your guests attending both the ceremony and the banquet must wear formal dress, i.e.

  • white tie and tails
  • long evening gown/skirt with separate top in the colour of your choise
  • academic gown
  • national costume.

Adolescents may dress less formally; a pretty dress or a white shirt with dark pants and a tie or bow tie.

Guests only attending the ceremony may dress as they please.

Ribbons and doctoral hats
The ribbon of an order may be worn. Only the dean and the honorary doctors of the Faculty of medicine participating in the ceremony will wear doctoral hats.
