Programme Overview

The Doctoral program at the Arctic Graduate School spans over four years, and covers a minimum of 15 credits. Apart from some mandatory courses and field trips, the Doctoral students are expected to participate in workshops and seminars.

Courses

Perspectives on Sustainability in Arctic Research I

5 credits

This course consists of a seminar series with one seminar per month. The seminar series has a specific theme each year that connects to the Arctic and sustainability.

The seminar series is hosted together with Arctic Five universities from Norway and Finland: UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and University of Lapland.

Perspectives on Sustainability in Arctic Research II

5 credits

This course aims to highlight different perspectives on Arctic research at Umeå University as represented by participants in their second year at the Graduate School. The aim is to create and support interdisciplinary research arenas and a common understanding of what others are doing when they do Arctic research.

Field Trip

1.5 credits

During all four years, the Doctoral students are expected to participate in field trips. The aim is to collaborate with other universities in other countries, to make it an international and transdisciplinary experience. The destinations for the trips are different each year. 

Mandatory is to participate in at least two field trips and their related activities.

In addition to the field trips, the Arctic Graduate School arranges activities like seminars, conferences, workshops and international collaborations that the Doctoral students are expected to participate in
