The Spring Graduation is one of the University's two academic celebrations. During two days in May the University's jubilee doctors and new doctors are celebrated.

The University's academic ceremonies originate from medieval European academic institutions. The ceremonies follow special rituals, with some expressions in Latin and special symbols of academic freedom, so-called doctoral insignia. You can find more information about the ceremonial procedure and what the terms being used mean, through the links at the bottom of this page.
The Spring Graduation Ceremony is open to the public. The Ceremony is mostly held in Swedish, with an exception if the doctor or jubilee doctor does not speak Swedish. If so, their receival of their diploma during the Spring Graduation Ceremony is held in English. You are, of course, still warmly welcome to attend the Spring Graduation Ceremony.
The Spring Graduation Ceremony begins in the afternoon with the doctors and jubilee doctors entering the auditorium in procession and taking their seats on stage.
The entire ceremony lasts for about 1.5 to 2 hours. You can also watch the Spring Graduation Ceremony online. It is broadcast on umu.se/live.

It is optional to be conferred. If you want to, you can postpone your participation to a year that suits you. Doctors are only conferred at the Spring Graduation, not at the Annual Celebration in the autumn.
To be conferred at the Spring Graduation you must apply for your doctoral degree no later than one month before the Spring Graduation Ceremony is held.
If you are interested in being conferred at the 2025 Spring Graduation, please fill in your information in this form and you will receive an email when registration opens in the beginning of 2025.
